First off, Happy New Year! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A big tradition of the new year is to create a resolution or two. I'd rather like to think of these resolutions as goals. Something to work towards, regardless of the ups and downs. This year, I have more than my share of goals. The first is to complete half of my WIPs (work in progress). Here is what I have going at the moment.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiV3RkmvAipykBX8QN1KKwmQ-npTuZR16hVnQF9_BjVIagPMLjK1Q-k40G2UwML0C867XRxeMkHeahUBwtPIdZxHaXxhCeuD1fCtm_emzvbw13mZeUYELKVeTQ68ZxukYbxXycGzFyi9l14/s1600/005+(2).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiV3RkmvAipykBX8QN1KKwmQ-npTuZR16hVnQF9_BjVIagPMLjK1Q-k40G2UwML0C867XRxeMkHeahUBwtPIdZxHaXxhCeuD1fCtm_emzvbw13mZeUYELKVeTQ68ZxukYbxXycGzFyi9l14/s1600/005+(2).JPG" height="400" width="223" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Melissa Shirley Christmas Stocking / Stitch Guide by Terry Christopher</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
My biggest must do is to finish my daughter's stocking. I've made a little more progress since this photo was taken, and now I need to focus on getting this canvas done.</div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiR2kDsLodaGLfWwD5tbdE6RgvrZ2iSoCkFin0Vl3bNMdI1Q41vZm0GXruxfLY2VngzEimP39bbGbyhhn_U5AkWBB173l8-DsKjMPVnmv-xfXHMfT_0o1EzhEIiEM7JZE0yXn1gUHlpnL3x/s1600/453.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiR2kDsLodaGLfWwD5tbdE6RgvrZ2iSoCkFin0Vl3bNMdI1Q41vZm0GXruxfLY2VngzEimP39bbGbyhhn_U5AkWBB173l8-DsKjMPVnmv-xfXHMfT_0o1EzhEIiEM7JZE0yXn1gUHlpnL3x/s1600/453.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Kelly Clark's Joseph / Stitch Guide by Amy Bunger</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Next on my list of must finishes is Joseph. Once he is done, I'll have the Holy Family completed and then can start on the wise men (in other words create more WIPs).</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Melissa Shirley Bunny / Stitch Guide by Terry Christopher</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Remember this canvas? When I became stuck on the ribbon flowers, I set it aside. I think it's about time that I finish this, and get it to the finisher before the Easter deadline.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Kelly Clark Mini Sock</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
This Kelly Clark mini sock has been my waiting room canvas. It's small enough to tuck into a bag and get a few stitches in while waiting for an appointment. I think it has all of an hour of stitching left.</div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I love this Melissa Shirley canvas. It is so pretty and has been a joy to stitch. I still have tons of work, but it's high on my list for a 2015 finish.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
This is the last of my must finishes for 2015. I started making this in September of 2013. Then with the move to Los Angeles and other unforeseen problems, I had to set it aside. I've already shown it to my parents, and they have set aside a place in their home to hang it. I should have this completed by the end of January.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
The following canvases are other WIPs that I hope to work on, but know that there is a slim to none chance of finishing by this time next year.</div>

<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Besides completing lots of stitching, my other goal for 2015 is to work on my blogging. I know I've been a miserable blogger this year. The reason is quite simple: I haven't been stitching. Nothing stitched means nothing posted. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The reason for my lack of stitching has been my back. Now I know there are millions of people with back pain who function just fine. They take an Aleve if their back acts up, and they get on with their day. That's how I was for over 20 years. Then about four years ago, I went from occasional pain to not being able to walk in a week's time. It took me two years to get back to a functional level. Although I couldn't work any longer, I still was able to spend time with my family and of course stitch.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then we had the move to Los Angeles. Although I was extra careful, my back problems grew worse. I couldn't sit for more than 30 minutes without being in a considerable amount of pain. Of course there are medications to help with this, but they have their side effects. For me, they made me really loopy. It was difficult to concentrate, read, and I couldn't drive. So I finally decided to have one last surgery (hopefully) to fuse some of my vertebrae together in the hope that I could return to a somewhat normal life.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm now six weeks post surgery and optimistic that my health will improve. It's still difficult to sit, but I'm making progress. I've been trying to stitch, even if it means just putting in one thread. Hopefully my life will return back to normal and I'll have lots of stitching to share with you. In the mean time, please be patient with me and know that I haven't given up on this blog.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So enough with all this personal sappy stuff.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I wish you all a 2015 filled with joy and hopefully lots of stitching!</div>

Living in Southern California definitely has it's advantages. Lots of sunshine, beautiful beaches and some really great needlepoint shops. Lately, I've been hanging out at Aristeia Needlepoint in Santa Monica. Aristeia is home to some of the most talented teachers: Laura Taylor, Beverly Churchfield, and Susan Portra. Today, I would like to share a project that I've been working on with Laura.</div>

So far I've made progress on this little leaf and have begun stitching the bird. I would have never chosen an eyelet for the bird's body. I would have chosen something predictably boring. This is why I love taking classes; it opens your eyes to so many possibilities.</div>

I just assumed it was a really cool needle minder, which we did get. But some of the ladies thought it might be a guest visitor. Well they were right because it was no other than the fabulous Brenda Stofft.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEij8_zFcQNd4FpM2CSvE58tRb8kQJa2juIZyEUoaGy-Yo0FdIB0Sqqjyrp4lCIc93wJLLkObZDNdOJd-aRDU5w3IopGV1MXPDKCxn5s18TJSj1UJYE5iBvtUt_xoZTsFRznnB4EzN4mkn32/s1600/1006.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEij8_zFcQNd4FpM2CSvE58tRb8kQJa2juIZyEUoaGy-Yo0FdIB0Sqqjyrp4lCIc93wJLLkObZDNdOJd-aRDU5w3IopGV1MXPDKCxn5s18TJSj1UJYE5iBvtUt_xoZTsFRznnB4EzN4mkn32/s1600/1006.JPG" height="400" width="223" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Brenda Stofft</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
If you've been needlepointing for a while, then you've probably heard of Brenda and most likely have a few of her canvases in your stash. Not only is Brenda one of the most successful needlepoint designers in the industry, but she is also a talented stitcher. I had so much fun chatting with her. It's always nice to know that an artist, who's work you admire and love to stitch, is such a nice person. <br />
<br />
The following photos are a few of the her nativity pieces that are an exclusive to the Needle Works. In case you are wondering, that's what Brenda was stitching while she was at the retreat.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikdQMVDVH4tSqHsWBHamxqOW2OOp6WgYYqTFncJLTY7sQ79A7GPvlC0aB7Kk1S3OY-3prIEktSKp6UF4DN4JqrMN0lOdGN4mnrSInxmGADhsRVkxI6i9e4NZraF0G89eRhxQ7_2fP7eUMb/s1600/984.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikdQMVDVH4tSqHsWBHamxqOW2OOp6WgYYqTFncJLTY7sQ79A7GPvlC0aB7Kk1S3OY-3prIEktSKp6UF4DN4JqrMN0lOdGN4mnrSInxmGADhsRVkxI6i9e4NZraF0G89eRhxQ7_2fP7eUMb/s1600/984.JPG" height="223" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Holy Family</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The first canvas in the nativity series is the Holy Family. This piece is gorgeous. Colleen did such a great job creating the stitch guide. In fact, Brenda mentioned several times about how pleased she was with how the series has turned out, and that Colleen did a fantastic job choosing threads and stitches that complemented each other but did not take away from the original design. What a compliment!<br />
<br />
Colleen had the Holy Family framed with a light behind the stained glass window. It's hard to tell in the photo, but the circular window was all beaded so that the light shines through. Unfortunately due to my camera, the window looks white. But in real life, it is dazzling with color. Definitely a finishing technique that I've never seen before, but absolutely loved.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Magi with Horse</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I thought that these were beautiful too. I'm curious to see how Colleen will have these and the rest of the nativity pieces finished.<br />
<br />
For those of you who know me, you've probably already guessed that I couldn't resist this series. I joined the club and started stitching the first canvas at the retreat! I think my mother, who was also at the retreat, thought I was a little crazy to buy another nativity series, as I already have the Kelly Clark nativity and Amy Bunger stitch guides. But sometimes you just have to be a little crazy and go for it. Besides, I'm justifying it with this reasoning: I have two kids whom I would like to give each a nativity, so I have to stitch two. Right!<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Holy Family Canvas</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
So far, I've really enjoyed stitching this piece and have added it into my rotation of canvases. I'll keep you posted on my progress.<br />
<br />
If you would like to see more of Brenda Stofft's work, make sure you check out her <a href="http://www.brendastofftdesign.com/">website</a>. To see the rest of the nativity series, you can view them at the <a href="http://theneedleworks.com/nativity/">Needle Works' website</a>. <br />

Its a great way to get away from all the distractions at home and have 2-3 days of stitching bliss. It used to be that retreats were a costly endeavour. Often there was a project piece, national teacher, hotel and travel accommodations, etc... But now, thanks to the Needlepoint group on Facebook, a new type of retreat is emerging. These new retreats are a little easier on the pocketbook. They are held in a store's classroom; you bring whatever project you are working on; there isn't any formal instruction, but there is always someone close by to offer some help; and you pick your own hotel accommodations. Last year I blogged about such a retreat at the Needle Works in Austin, Texas. You can read about it <a href="http://lazydaisyneedlework.blogspot.com/2013/05/three-days-of-stitching-bliss.html">here</a> and <a href="http://lazydaisyneedlework.blogspot.com/2013/05/three-days-of-stitching-bliss-part-ii.html">here</a>.<br />
<br />
Once again, Naomi, a fellow needlepoint <strike>addict</strike> stitcher, and Colleen Church, the owner of the Needle Works, planned our second annual retreat. It was a blast! Each recipient received a custom made needle minder. I love our official new title for our retreat: "Bluebonnet Conference".<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Bluebonnet Conference Needle Minders</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
We also received the new Puffin needle threaders that were just released. I've never been a big fan of needle threaders, but these had me changing my mind. The hook portion is very sturdy, yet fine enough to fit into the eye of a 26 tapestry needle. They may be able to go smaller, but I didn't have any 28's to try. They also have a magnetic disk on the back that will adhere to tacks, so it's always easy to find.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The best part of the retreat are all the friends, new and old. This year, we had to close to 30 participants, so it was a tight squeeze fitting into the classroom. It also meant that it was difficult to get around to get everyone's photos. But I did get some group photos in which you can get a peek at what everyone was stitching.<br />

As you can see, there was a lot of stitching and chatting going on.<br />
<br />
The last day of the retreat, Colleen welcomed us to her home for a fabulous dinner prepared by Missy Gray. We had a great time visiting and getting to see an adorable owl who has decided to call Colleen's backyard "home'. Smart owl, if you ask me.<br />
<br />
So if you have ever thought about going on a needlepoint retreat, I would highly recommend it. A good place to inquire about one is with your local needlepoint store. If you don't have one or they don't offer retreats, then check out the Needlepoint group on Facebook.<br />
<br />
Don't know about this group? Well here is how to find it. Once you are logged onto Facebook, enter "needlepoint" into the search bar. Several choices will come up. Just look for the one with over 4,900 members. Request to join and then get ready to devote several hours looking at all the gorgeous canvases. I will admit that it's a bit addicting. However, I wouldn't have ever learned about this retreat and made so many friends had it not been for this group.<br />
<br />
Happy Stitching!<br />

I can't believe it's been seven months since my last post. I wish I could write that I've been too busy stitching to keep up with this blog. But the truth is, I've barely picked up a needle this entire time. When I last left you, I was in the middle of an entire home remodel. We're talking down to the studs remodeling. Now, I know that remodeling projects are supposed to be crazy and that they say it can test the best of marriages, but I certainly wasn't expecting what was heading my way. About a week after my last post, my husband came home and said, "I've got great news, I got a promotion! Oh, and we have to move to Los Angeles." Ughhhhh! </div>
<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
So for the last seven months I've remodeled a house, shopped and purchased a new house, found renters for my old house, bought a car for my son who had his car totaled in a car accident by an uninsured motorist, (It wasn't his fault, and yes, he is okay), nursed my 19 year old daughter back to health after back surgery (She is doing fine.) Then my back decided to flare up, so I had a couple of epidurals. Feeling left out my right shoulder decided to go out too. Two cortisone shots and surgery two weeks after moving, I am now on the mend. In case you are wondering, I'm right handed so I couldn't even stitch while I was recuperating. And there is more, but I think you get the idea.</div>

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
So now that things have begun to settle down, I'm starting to needlepoint. I haven't been able to devote lots of time to stitching, but I'm back to trying to get in an hour a day. Here is what I've been working on...</div>

Happy Stitching!Monicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14491751823769495036noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7285947946070026494.post-10379658933744267442013-09-16T11:36:00.000-07:002013-09-16T11:36:41.027-07:00Remodeling and Needlepoint Don't Mix<div style="text-align: center;">
On New Year's Eve, I made a resolution that I would stitch a minimum of one hour per day. For the most part, I've stuck to it. That is until mid August. That's when we started to remodel our house. Since then, my needlepoint has fallen to the wayside.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Our home has been graced with the architecture of the 1980's. In my opinion, the 80"s were a scary decade: fashion, hairstyles and yes architecture. For instance, the bathtub in the master bath is situated right in the middle of the room. This was done to accommodate a planter! Yep, you read that correctly, a planter so one could do some gardening as they relaxed in the tub. Hmmmm...makes me wonder who thought that one up....</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Hopefully the bathroom will be completed soon and life will return back to normal. In the mean time, I decided to work a canvas from the Kelly Clark nativity series. This was part of a club that I signed up for through Amy's Golden Strand in Memphis, Tennessee. Each canvas comes with a fabulous stitch guide written by Amy Bunger. Amy's stitch guides are thoughtfully written and challenging. I always learn something new when using them.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is my progress on Joseph after working on him off and on this past week.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNpPSo7AtqN1kqLn4XhExDCQ2jKeDNsM1A3DUNAdZvxJVyif197XFRxRxQA-4fJa-AIpjklZtbrBXVJ0V0Y1md-8phQKFqTehJqeovpLM9Tyk79k7L3A6kDCG5bvjMf5JabbjGyV3ofMow/s1600/247.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNpPSo7AtqN1kqLn4XhExDCQ2jKeDNsM1A3DUNAdZvxJVyif197XFRxRxQA-4fJa-AIpjklZtbrBXVJ0V0Y1md-8phQKFqTehJqeovpLM9Tyk79k7L3A6kDCG5bvjMf5JabbjGyV3ofMow/s400/247.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The bottom border and background are the same on all the canvases. Since I've already competed Jesus and Mary, this stitching has been easy. I took the time to count out the trellis design to make sure that Joseph is centered in the design. To help with the counting, I used a blue pen to continue the design on the canvas selvage. This is a quilter's pen which will disappear when you brush with cold water. I haven't had any problems with these pens, but I've heard from other stitchers that the blue lines can come back. To be safe, I only use these pens on the canvas salvage.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You might also notice, that Joseph's facial features have been painted out. Amy provides a detailed chart in each stitch guide that maps out the face. Sometimes the chart doesn't match up what has been painted on the canvas. At first, I thought I could stitch over the painted image, but the dark colors were showing through and creating weird shadows. For me, it was just easier to paint out the face with good quality acrylic paint.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivITbS4mXbVJ6X_nuSXB4TtRUa05pKphCPPjwb_gywrm_l-8ZetswqlkliRGuwsSsVdlll5LXQwz1u_7gAc_RDAHTXS7urUKs-3vS_CaGluA5PWOnBC91C7Tf9CVDgykAM5NgtgiY-5rmQ/s1600/249.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivITbS4mXbVJ6X_nuSXB4TtRUa05pKphCPPjwb_gywrm_l-8ZetswqlkliRGuwsSsVdlll5LXQwz1u_7gAc_RDAHTXS7urUKs-3vS_CaGluA5PWOnBC91C7Tf9CVDgykAM5NgtgiY-5rmQ/s400/249.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is a closeup of the border. I just love the way it turned out.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Happy Stitching!</div>
Monicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14491751823769495036noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7285947946070026494.post-43120562568552682962013-08-17T21:24:00.000-07:002013-08-17T21:24:59.801-07:00A Finish!<div style="text-align: center;">
Lately, I've been frustrated by most of my needlepoint projects. With some canvases, I've been stumped as to which stitch to use. With others, I just can't get particular stitches to turn out the way I want. When this happens, I find the best thing to do is to switch to a different project. Sometimes a little break is all that is needed to get those creative juices flowing again. That's exactly what I did this last week. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg92jjN3_8CcaHL30eST3lQ-FzavUntefIbyJmMFlHhhRlFOOW8z-fRZO-Je6SAr_gNrsYIpAOXn-agA78wXiV1FfrG10T8l-lIr4mvNrBm5pplHtUCjzw8hYHTjmsxahR2JnNJH9A_l8Sz/s1600/085.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg92jjN3_8CcaHL30eST3lQ-FzavUntefIbyJmMFlHhhRlFOOW8z-fRZO-Je6SAr_gNrsYIpAOXn-agA78wXiV1FfrG10T8l-lIr4mvNrBm5pplHtUCjzw8hYHTjmsxahR2JnNJH9A_l8Sz/s400/085.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
This canvas is by Ewe & Eye and is called Dee. I'm not sure how it ended up in the closet in my WIP pile because all I had left to stitch was one of the arms and then attach the beads. Easy! I had stitched over the spots for the beads, so that they wouldn't get lost between the decorative stitches. In doing this, I wasn't able to see where the beads were supposed to go. Most people would just wing it and place the beads where they see fit. But if you're like me, that is easier said then done. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgedniXIp2k57AWP_oW9uZ5eakwRvv2O7C0Ibq6ltkuKwmxUd1W82qwKFhL5RNY97w4n1elJnUcFgkWDsKa6dZBOhsm_Sz5ruMzburJuf2XYKPQWr5przC9s9EtQECCmDLpJTfFT205M3or/s1600/087.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgedniXIp2k57AWP_oW9uZ5eakwRvv2O7C0Ibq6ltkuKwmxUd1W82qwKFhL5RNY97w4n1elJnUcFgkWDsKa6dZBOhsm_Sz5ruMzburJuf2XYKPQWr5przC9s9EtQECCmDLpJTfFT205M3or/s400/087.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Before stitching a canvas, I always make a color copy. I took that copy and darkened the black dots where the beads were to be placed. Next I carefully lined up the color copy over the canvas.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgf8Ky6njRLOvY8_dZ7edzXSksQH4j75f5sRV2h6IdHmER22S6V7zfzY6T915q7Dkl8B5auWIZrCDFnfUNenI9pSMKxxOvKw-FvzwCFohY5l87ljIr9W8beRtryrBN0Uw7BVZSjRs9bww1N/s1600/088.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgf8Ky6njRLOvY8_dZ7edzXSksQH4j75f5sRV2h6IdHmER22S6V7zfzY6T915q7Dkl8B5auWIZrCDFnfUNenI9pSMKxxOvKw-FvzwCFohY5l87ljIr9W8beRtryrBN0Uw7BVZSjRs9bww1N/s400/088.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I pierced the copy and canvas with some large size tapestry needles. Next, I carefully lifted the copy away leaving the needles in the canvas.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRid5MN5cCdVMURq6qisl3cHj0PKlQiLGKH2KfO9G6jeA52U1htY1ijxHORxog8vUvur4sLznCuzEDzqPSBm9NxNScdIWS1rU_I_oiEJEFAYxIK1mQD7hqkhn9qhB-vI1lLmJDfhHJUhrn/s1600/089.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRid5MN5cCdVMURq6qisl3cHj0PKlQiLGKH2KfO9G6jeA52U1htY1ijxHORxog8vUvur4sLznCuzEDzqPSBm9NxNScdIWS1rU_I_oiEJEFAYxIK1mQD7hqkhn9qhB-vI1lLmJDfhHJUhrn/s320/089.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now, I had the correct placement for the eyes.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4vGA7zNvawilQkxzikLxLShaQAdBfNqy0RuQmxlT7HE4rPW5_Ckb3HyTES05VpM8AQYY-c3cKgBoK6Ug1wntMsAsMZmeR0q7AYm3kmkmStXjdDkotl-C-pAytI7I_5cTf3A52Mfmyr69s/s1600/096.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4vGA7zNvawilQkxzikLxLShaQAdBfNqy0RuQmxlT7HE4rPW5_Ckb3HyTES05VpM8AQYY-c3cKgBoK6Ug1wntMsAsMZmeR0q7AYm3kmkmStXjdDkotl-C-pAytI7I_5cTf3A52Mfmyr69s/s400/096.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I did the same thing for the mouth, too.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAAtqpQ-dWF5n6C1cMjPkOwqa_nv_l_ej16BtAjvI79G130Qp7_6ogMkWYZWZMvbOhM5XFjAg1Hf9LHrJ4qxSGGXtCiTs_ENQd080tnS7YfMhIRfpp-7R_tvzuzlGRQvrMWubdGawvg2tx/s1600/105.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAAtqpQ-dWF5n6C1cMjPkOwqa_nv_l_ej16BtAjvI79G130Qp7_6ogMkWYZWZMvbOhM5XFjAg1Hf9LHrJ4qxSGGXtCiTs_ENQd080tnS7YfMhIRfpp-7R_tvzuzlGRQvrMWubdGawvg2tx/s400/105.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is the canvas all finished. Yeaaah! Finally a finish! The following pictures are closeups of this canvas. I wish I could take credit for coming up with all these beautiful stitches and thread selection, but the credit goes to Terry Christopher from 2 the Point in Pleasanton, CA. I love Terry's stitch guides. She does a great job making sure that a canvas has perspective. Notice how the snowman looks like he is coming forward, and the background recedes.</div>

I've been a bit overwhelmed with some remodeling projects, a trip to San Diego for Comic-Con, and my daughter's college orientation. Needless to say, I didn't get a lot of stitching done. In fact I managed a whopping three hours. No, that's not three hours a day. That's three hours since my last post. It's times like this that I wish there was such a thing as the "Stitching Police" so they could enforce my commitment of stitching one hour per day.<br />
<br />
Although I don't have any stitching to show you, I did partake in <strike>a little</strike> a lot of retail therapy. I went to three needlepoint shops while I was in San Diego. All of them were absolutely wonderful: friendly, knowledgeable staff, and great threads and canvases. San Diego knows how to needlepoint!<br />
<br />
The first store I went to was <a href="http://www.needlenook.com/">Needle Nook of La Jolla</a>. They are in a beautiful part of La Jolla just blocks from the beach. The store is split in two. One shop for threads and another for canvases (with a linen store in the middle). I stopped by the canvas store first and was helped by Beverly and Susan who were just awesome. Look at all the trouble they got me into...<br />

After shopping at Needle Nook's canvas store, I needed a break. After all, that shopping was hard work. I went across the street to The Cottage for lunch. If you fallow Vicky De Angelis' blog, <a href="http://mostlyneedlepoint.com/">Mostly Needlepoint</a>, then that name might sound familiar. Vicky is always raving about The Cottage, so I had to try it out. It did not disappoint. After lunch, I was ready for Needle Nook part two: the fiber store.</div>

Doesn't it look wonderful! I'm not sure if you can tell from the photo, but there are sliding doors on each of the long walls which double the amount of hanging space for fibers. I thought that was a fabulous idea. Everyone at the Needle Nook was really nice. As you can probably see, I had a lot of fun shopping there.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The next day, I visited <a href="http://www.needlepointoflajolla.com/">Needlepoint of la Jolla</a>. I have to admit that I used to think that Needlepoint of La Jolla and Needle Nook of La Jolla were the same store. I'm glad I realized my error, otherwise I would have missed out on visiting such a great store and meeting owners Michelle and Bill. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

The t-shirt opens at the top for a bone (which was still being finished) to be inserted. Isn't that the cutest idea! Michelle also has one of the best fabric selections I've ever seen at a needlepoint store. She must have close to twenty fabric books filled with gorgeous silks, cottons, etc...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Michelle's partner, Bill, also provides a unique service to their customers. He paints custom orders. I know that might not sound that different, but he does all the painting in the store. So if he is painting a custom for you, you can stop by the shop to see how it's progressing. </div>

My last stop was at <a href="http://www.theneedleworkssd.com/">The Needleworks</a> in San Diego. This stop was a little sad because after 40 years The Needleworks is closing. They are, however, planning on creating an on-line store. You could tell that this store was special by the number of ladies who were just hanging out and stitching/knitting. It's a cozy shop that makes you feel like you are visiting a friend. I'm sure they will be missed by their customers. Although, most of their stock was sold, I did find this cute Melissa Shirley canvas.</div>

After visiting John Johannsen's studio, I was itching to stitch one of his canvases. You should be proud of me. Instead of starting a new canvas, I went through my WIP pile and found this little bunny. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Terry Christopher, owner of 2 the Point, created the stitch guide. I love Terry's guides. Everything is well explained and charted, so you don't have to reference any other books. I had started stitching this canvas last year, and then stopped because I didn't like how my ribbon flowers were turning out. This was the first time I had ever used ribbon, and had underestimated how difficult it can be to work with. So now it's time to practice stitching up some flowers on the margin.</div>

<br />
Last week, I went to the Legion of Honor to view their new exhibit: <i>Impressionists on the Water</i>. It was a wonderful collection of paintings depicting water scenes along the Seine and the coast of France. The picture to the left was one of my favorites: <i>Boats Moored at Le Petit-Gennevilliers </i>by Claude Monet. Other works of art by Renoir, Pissaro, Caillebotte, and many more are featured in the Legion's galleries. If you are interested in seeing this exhibit, here is a direct link to the <a href="http://impressionists.famsf.org/about-the-exhibition">Legion</a>. The exhibit ends in October of 2013.<br />
<br />
After viewing all the wonderful paintings, I stopped by the museum's store and found a great book entitled <i>The Private Lives of the Impressionists</i> by Sue Roe. Some of you may have already heard about or read this book as it was published in 2006, but it was new to me. I've always loved learning about the lives of artists, so this book is perfect. I think it's fascinating to know the why, where and when behind works of art. <br />
<br />
Recently, I had the opportunity to visit one of my favorite modern day artists: John Johannsen. (If you are a fan of Melissa Shirley, then you have seen John Johannsen's work. A few years back, Melissa began producing John's painting on needlepoint canvas. Here is a link to John's <a href="http://melissashirleydesigns.com//gallery/?cat=117">needlepoint designs.</a>) As you might have guessed, I was very excited to meet John and see where he created his work.<br />
<br />
John's studio is nestled in the California foothills in a very unassuming warehouse type building. The kind of building you could drive by hundreds of times and not think anything about it. But once you step through the door, it's as if you stepped into another world. <br />

Well, not anymore. Halloween is second only to Christmas canvases and the margin is narrowing. It's easy to see why - these Halloween canvases are so darn cute! When I visited Melissa Shirley's studio, I fell in love with all her Halloween and fall themed canvases. Here is a glimpse of what's available...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2AwBQiC3DM6M1PEQM1rqDWUoDuPgTzcS6TZlqiO5LcIk5L9IpDBb8xQ8mebwjaVa8MbhrT2-aKhDBhUZRg1wNaFZIZ_gBg4GOYLPJqqM2RuYGE7AZdIFwdn41YTZ-5zZKqo5FJ6IPh-VX/s1600/079.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2AwBQiC3DM6M1PEQM1rqDWUoDuPgTzcS6TZlqiO5LcIk5L9IpDBb8xQ8mebwjaVa8MbhrT2-aKhDBhUZRg1wNaFZIZ_gBg4GOYLPJqqM2RuYGE7AZdIFwdn41YTZ-5zZKqo5FJ6IPh-VX/s400/079.JPG" width="223" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When you first enter Melissa's studio, you are greeted by this lovely cabinet filled with needlepoint. (Who needs dishes! lol)</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5ktbxXaOE5fojzmVcIPAe-YvPug_9JpM0pW1izyVEeesVvOJzRFvhLG-kiCOxHdeXl_6qv53ruxrpgd7-L9KpBOLAhstiRGDX_YHb6P4mF92VQP-SZj5klOmrztAUZWvwY-zShyphenhyphenoQUpp3/s1600/080.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5ktbxXaOE5fojzmVcIPAe-YvPug_9JpM0pW1izyVEeesVvOJzRFvhLG-kiCOxHdeXl_6qv53ruxrpgd7-L9KpBOLAhstiRGDX_YHb6P4mF92VQP-SZj5klOmrztAUZWvwY-zShyphenhyphenoQUpp3/s400/080.JPG" width="223" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Hanging from a knob is this whimsical skull. It was finished so that it could be filled with candy or other Halloween delights.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQNOewPxHp-6EwYKJA0cYL9u7Sbo3ukDDt8d-gO6IpXZNMtMAwJPAcq2TT00JtGLCKF8L9iM_FNWxtGXXtaFoP5Ayw8yWNC8bqTHManqGEtTlbFT7kqrAYKx8O3ODDhd_UGsq0aq5Dt14J/s1600/038.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="223" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQNOewPxHp-6EwYKJA0cYL9u7Sbo3ukDDt8d-gO6IpXZNMtMAwJPAcq2TT00JtGLCKF8L9iM_FNWxtGXXtaFoP5Ayw8yWNC8bqTHManqGEtTlbFT7kqrAYKx8O3ODDhd_UGsq0aq5Dt14J/s400/038.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Isn't this adorable. I love how the pumpkins just jump off the canvas. I didn't notice this while I was there, but I think some of the pumpkins might be appliqued to the canvas. At least that's how it looks in the picture.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This little guy just makes me smile. It's a small canvas that would stitch up in a weekend. There are lots of different "monsters" available. Imagine a row of them trick or treating across a shelf in your home....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitjs_yOV9Wmp5CMBLo6fIeizljiffwQD3UxDn552mTmutxzKQN6kG9-X944faXe25ubwEXzQe4QK3h8qZHRztR5MPKiRAjvS7j19ji7LsMMP24gpiEQ6XM0_UghKu3L3L2b-yrsF6Xsgvp/s1600/036.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitjs_yOV9Wmp5CMBLo6fIeizljiffwQD3UxDn552mTmutxzKQN6kG9-X944faXe25ubwEXzQe4QK3h8qZHRztR5MPKiRAjvS7j19ji7LsMMP24gpiEQ6XM0_UghKu3L3L2b-yrsF6Xsgvp/s400/036.JPG" width="223" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This witch was fantastic! Look at all the great stitches and fibers that were used. I'm not sure what fiber was used for the straw sticking out of her hat, but it is really effective. And the frog is the cutest. His tongue is sticking out and looks three dimensional - maybe a picot stitch</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEge-M18PXiVzAl-BR-3dT3QuAPNuS_43461vqK8LydMke15FCG4ePDL68KW4E6fiBGbRG6k1LhFS_O85OFXMZZrU_MvjhKExdQ2aERcLR3YoqdZVUgtRRkm4Tp5u3le6uxaeTS-W2bU3buN/s1600/039.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="223" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEge-M18PXiVzAl-BR-3dT3QuAPNuS_43461vqK8LydMke15FCG4ePDL68KW4E6fiBGbRG6k1LhFS_O85OFXMZZrU_MvjhKExdQ2aERcLR3YoqdZVUgtRRkm4Tp5u3le6uxaeTS-W2bU3buN/s400/039.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
On top of the cabinet, were these fun Halloween decorations. The wooden stands look great and are a smart way to display needlepoint. And doesn't everyone need a witch's house made of needlepoint? I'm thinking that I do! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Also on top of the cabinet was this great hat.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
These two houses were not stitched, but I can just imagine how they would look all finished. They are smaller than the larger houses that Melissa is known for, but just as cute.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This Indian maiden was one of my favorite canvases. Here is a close up...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Everything about this canvas was just exquisite! I think I definitely need to add this to my stash.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have a few more photos to share with you, but they will have to wait until next time. I need to get busy and get some stitching done. Hope you have a great weekend.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Happy Stitching!</div>

Well, at least that's what I told my husband. It was actually a shop till you drop trip. Terry Christopher, owner of 2 the Point, organized the trip. We took a cute little bus there, had a yummy lunch, and then a special chance to meet John Johannsen and tour his studio too! Melissa and John - all in one day; I was in needlepoint heaven!<br />
<br />
I think one of the best things about going to Melissa's studio (besides meeting Melissa - and yes, she really is a delight) was being inspired by all the finished pieces she had on display. I took tons of photos and wanted to share some of the finishing that I saw.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0MGLFSOfB3i-U0vYbMlRqUm35i1MNDoY_M_P-VU8McbN_aCSdPu_v8HPpYlabp13kcLnaWoeDgunTYaXs9W5Kyhneuv7_FxHfrGUhiaTEsC9D1F7mTmAKsaV7v6UxyzNMjlOPKHz169PS/s1600/002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0MGLFSOfB3i-U0vYbMlRqUm35i1MNDoY_M_P-VU8McbN_aCSdPu_v8HPpYlabp13kcLnaWoeDgunTYaXs9W5Kyhneuv7_FxHfrGUhiaTEsC9D1F7mTmAKsaV7v6UxyzNMjlOPKHz169PS/s400/002.JPG" width="223" /></a></div>
<br />
These are one of Melissa's 12 Days of Christmas series. I love how these were finished with the side detailing. Instead of being a flat ornament, these were about 1/2 inch thick with ribbon and beading detail. I think the thickness added to the luxury of these ornaments. Wouldn't it be nice to have all 12 on your Christmas tree?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhr-MAlBgMH5qYXA4NsIgPh7ypOdAFTiwabQzUl3ckLqYP4Pe0YrbUc1msDZVZ8wxqclavg7B8IDF2RtpvBaTbnYJpOTJT59Tct9ttCvAUcKdVoaU2J3wRWNrR4vrj4ll7dv45Mg3zGqsq_/s1600/005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhr-MAlBgMH5qYXA4NsIgPh7ypOdAFTiwabQzUl3ckLqYP4Pe0YrbUc1msDZVZ8wxqclavg7B8IDF2RtpvBaTbnYJpOTJT59Tct9ttCvAUcKdVoaU2J3wRWNrR4vrj4ll7dv45Mg3zGqsq_/s400/005.JPG" width="223" /></a></div>
<br />
Here is the partridge from the same series. I just love the way he was stitched. I do believe that there is a stitch guide available for all 12 ornaments.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNoB5WVTn4aKkcLJ_TW163BAWcGdWc-tY4jjXL9EzAmevQn-k2D9q8W2wGzqpOuNUSayJyCS320VSK-_ApfrR69_DWnO0MhzLCb2_ojymPCw5GURu4leXbx6C03zWGx0dxPNNuJSNYKSiT/s1600/008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNoB5WVTn4aKkcLJ_TW163BAWcGdWc-tY4jjXL9EzAmevQn-k2D9q8W2wGzqpOuNUSayJyCS320VSK-_ApfrR69_DWnO0MhzLCb2_ojymPCw5GURu4leXbx6C03zWGx0dxPNNuJSNYKSiT/s400/008.JPG" width="223" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Also finished in a similar fashion, were these beautiful angels. These are a little thicker than the 12 Days of Christmas and have an adorable rickrack trim. Towards the bottom of the picture is a pear which had at least an one inch gusset, so it could stand on it's own, as well as hang from a tree.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is a close up of the side. Isn't it adorable? I don't think I will finish an ornament flat ever again.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Doesn't everyone need a wreath filled with needlepoint ornaments? My front door has a large glass insert, so when I hang our Christmas wreath outside, we see it's shadow from the inside. I think I need a wreath just like this to hang inside the house. This way my front door looks good from both sides.<span style="text-align: center;"> </span></div>

Here is the last of the Christmas themed canvases. When I first saw these canvases, I thought they were nice, but they didn't knock my socks off. Well, let me tell you, these are beautiful in person! They have definitely made it onto my must stitch list. I love the shabby chic bases that the finisher used. However, I think I will use a darker base for mine, so that it fits in with my home decor.<br />
<br />
A big thank you to Melissa and Terry for making this trip possible. I had such a great time, and did a little stash enhancing too!<br />
<br />
I have more photos to share with you Watch for my next post, when I share Melissa's fall themed canvases.<br />
If you want to see any of the above canvases, visit <a href="http://melissashirleydesigns.com//">Melissa's website</a>.<br />
<br />
Happy Stitching!<br />

Santa's suit is all done. I just have his beard, face and gloves to complete. I also think I need to add something extra to the boots. Maybe some beads to look like buttons laced with some Kreinik. What do you think?<br />

Yesterday, I went to my LNS, 2 the Point, and picked up some additional threads for the fireplace. So I have plenty of stitching to keep me busy this weekend.<br />

Happy Stitching!Monicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14491751823769495036noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7285947946070026494.post-10668891695947755252013-05-25T13:34:00.000-07:002013-05-25T13:37:36.071-07:00Memorial Day WeekendThis Memorial Day Weekend, I decided to have a stay-cation, so that I could focus on stitching (and maybe a little gardening). The main canvas that I want to work on is my daughter's stocking. I started stitching it about five years ago, and have half of it done. It really should have been completed by now, but I've let other canvases take priority. My goal is to turn in this stocking to the finisher by September 1st.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLW-RpmKRRKtlV10WJodgsdAgsso-IPLGbsqAtzUVSqFMVKzhl6QzRL5nDtK6S63s1V7E18bHSt_jpgk5W-PIJ8KqzTuXNeRGhkKh30ff-T30BG1sR3td7OJn1MZkiDXxg6i8c9M_gQj0E/s1600/012.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLW-RpmKRRKtlV10WJodgsdAgsso-IPLGbsqAtzUVSqFMVKzhl6QzRL5nDtK6S63s1V7E18bHSt_jpgk5W-PIJ8KqzTuXNeRGhkKh30ff-T30BG1sR3td7OJn1MZkiDXxg6i8c9M_gQj0E/s400/012.JPG" width="222" /></a></div>
<br />
When I first saw this Melissa Shirley stocking, I knew it would be perfect for my daughter. Ever since she was three years old, my husband would dress up as Santa to deliver all the Christmas gifts. At first, my daughter, Alexandra, was frightened by his visits and would run back to her room to hide under the covers. But as the years passed, Alexandra and her brother would look forward to the annual midnight visit. They would leave the typical cookies and milk out (and carrots for the reindeer). Later on, they set up the camera and video camera to capture the moment. <br />
<br />
By the third grade, I was fairly sure that they figured out who Santa really was, but the kids continued to play along for a few more years. Probably out of fear that Santa might not deliver presents if they didn't believe.<br />
<br />
Now with the kids in college, Santa has hung up his coat and hat, but only temporarily. He is hoping to resume his visits when grandchildren arrive.<br />
<br />
Here are a few more close up photos of the stocking...<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I started stitching the holly with random long stitches in three different colors of Splendor. I then used a Kreinik #4 braid for the center vein.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Santa's suit is being stitched in a combination of Splendor and Soie Cristale. I've used Burmillana for the fur trim. I would be very happy if I could finish Santa this weekend!</div>

My other goal is to finish the chair. All the flowers have been done in Petite Velour. The green will be done in silk.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
What will you be stitching this weekend?</div>

These ladies were so much fun, that I for one, spent more time talking then I actually did stitching! But that's okay because it was wonderful making new friends and seeing what everyone else was working on. Here are some photos of many of the stitchers and their projects. There were a few people whom I didn't photograph. Sorry Mom! Yes, I even forgot to take a picture of my mom and the cute nutcracker she was working on. Wish I would have checked my camera before we all left.<br />

I warned them of the dangers of posting too much information and most of all, to be very careful of who they met online. So what did I do this past April? Well, I flew to Texas to meet eighteen women who I had met on Facebook. And boy, am I glad I did!<br />
<br />
The retreat took place at the Needle Works in Austin, Texas. Colleen Church was such a gracious host, and her staff were ever so helpful. I didn't get a picture of the store front, but you can see it here on the cover of a stitch book that Colleen gave to everyone.<br />

<br />
The Needle Works has one of the best classrooms I've ever stitched in. Three walls are all windows which lets in tons of natural light. There were also extra lights and magnifiers at each table just in case you might need one. I wish I took more pictures of the classroom, so you could see how wonderful it is.<br />

<br />
Our stitching retreat was coordinated by the lovely Naomi who in my book is pretty fantastic. She made sure that everything ran smoothly, and did a great job at spoiling us all. Naomi put together the cutest gift bags for everyone, but the piece de resistance were our name tags. She embroidered twenty, yes twenty, gorgeous name tags.<br />

When I told my kids what I was going to do, they thought I was crazy. "Who would want to read a blog about needlepointing?" they said. Little do they know! <br />
<br />
I hope you enjoy accompanying me on my stitching journey. And if you have any thoughts or ideas please comment, I'm looking forward to reading them!Monicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14491751823769495036noreply@blogger.com6
